October HVAC Checklist for Longview Homes: Get Ready Before the First Frost

By Feltons’ Heating & Cooling · Suggested publish date: October 1, 2018

The calendar says October. In Longview, that usually means something more specific: mornings in the 40s, wet leaves around the outdoor unit, and the first night you reach for the heat instead of the fan.

Average October highs here sit in the low 60s. Overnight lows fall into the mid-40s, rain picks up, and the first frost often arrives late in the month. That is the exact window when heat pumps, furnaces, and dual-fuel systems get their first real workout of the season.

If you wait until the first cold snap, you will be calling at the same time as everyone else. October is the month to get ahead of it.

Why October Matters in Southwest Washington

Summer service checks cooling. October service checks heating. Those are not the same job.

A heat pump that cooled just fine in August still has to reverse refrigerant flow, run a defrost cycle in damp 40-degree weather, and (on many systems) kick on auxiliary or dual-fuel heat when outdoor temperatures drop. A furnace that sat quiet all summer still has a heat exchanger, burners, inducer, and safety switches that have not been asked to work in months.

Southwest Washington adds a local wrinkle: long stretches of cool, wet weather. Outdoor coils collect leaves, moss, and fir needles. Condensate drains clog. Defrost boards work harder than they do in a dry climate. Homes in Longview, Kelso, Castle Rock, Rainier, St. Helens, Scappoose, and Cathlamet see this pattern every fall.

Your October Homeowner Checklist

Do these items this week. None of them replace a technician visit, but they catch the problems that strand families on the first 38-degree night.

1. Switch the thermostat to heat and test it now

Set the system to heat and raise the setpoint 3–4 degrees. Warm air should arrive within a few minutes on a furnace. A heat pump may blow air that feels milder at first — that is normal — but the supply air should still be warmer than room temperature. If the system short-cycles, blows cold, or never starts, call before the weekend storm, not during it.

2. Replace the filter

A dirty filter is the most common reason a heat pump ices over or a furnace overheats and shuts down. October is a fresh-filter month. If you have pets or a wood stove, plan on checking it again in November.

3. Clear the outdoor unit

Give the heat pump or AC condenser two feet of clearance on every side. Pull away leaves, grass clippings, tomato cages, and anything that settled against the cabinet over summer. Do not take a pressure washer to the fins. A garden hose on gentle spray is enough for surface debris; bent fins and packed dirt belong to a technician.

4. Check vents and returns

Open supply registers in rooms you actually use. Make sure sofas, rugs, and storage bins are not blocking returns. Restricted airflow in heating mode is how you get frozen coils, noisy blowers, and rooms that never catch up.

5. Look at the condensate line and pan

Heat pumps and high-efficiency furnaces still move moisture in the fall. A backed-up drain can trip a float switch and shut the system off. If you see standing water or algae in the pan, that is a service call, not a DIY bleach experiment on a running unit.

6. Walk the home for comfort gaps

October is when you notice the cold bedroom, the draft at the slider, and the hallway that never warms up. Those symptoms can be a zoning issue, a failing blower, undersized equipment, or leaky ducts. Write them down before the technician arrives so the visit is useful.

Heat Pumps: What October Does to Them

Most of the heat pump calls we take in October fall into a short list.

The outdoor unit is frosting

A light coat of frost on a cool, damp morning can be normal. The system should go into defrost, steam for a few minutes, and clear. Ice that builds into a shell, water that never drains off the base, or a unit that stays in defrost for long stretches points to a dirty coil, weak airflow, low refrigerant, or a failing defrost sensor or control board.

It runs but the house stays chilly

That can be a reversing valve that is not shifting fully, a thermostat still set to cool or auto-fan quirks, a failing auxiliary heat strip, or a dual-fuel system that is not handing off to the furnace when it should. Guessing which one it is from the living room wastes a cold evening.

It is loud in a new way

Rattles often mean debris in the fan or a loose panel. Screeches and grinding usually mean a motor bearing. A hard bang at startup can be a delayed ignition on a dual-fuel furnace or a compressor that is struggling. New noises in October are worth a look before they become a no-heat call in November.

The electric bill jumped after one cold week

Heat pumps are efficient when they are clean, charged, and moving air. When they are not, they lean on expensive backup heat. A fall tune-up is often the cheapest way to find out whether you have a maintenance problem or a system that is simply undersized for a Cowlitz County winter.

Furnaces and Dual-Fuel Systems Need a Fall Pass Too

If your home still runs a gas, oil, or electric furnace — or a furnace paired with a heat pump — October is the month to confirm it will light cleanly.

  • Heat exchanger inspection for cracks or corrosion.
  • Burner and flame-sensor cleaning so the furnace does not lock out.
  • Inducer, pressure switch, and venting check. Birds and debris love fall flue caps.
  • Gas pressure and temperature rise within manufacturer spec.
  • Carbon monoxide and combustion safety checks.

Oil furnaces, which we still service across the region, need a nozzle, filter, and combustion check before you lean on them for the season. Do not wait until the tank is low and the nights are in the 30s.

What Our Fall Visit Covers

A Feltons’ fall heating tune-up is a working inspection, not a five-minute filter swap. Depending on the equipment, our technicians typically:

  • Test heating mode end to end, including thermostat communication.
  • Inspect and clean indoor and outdoor coils as needed.
  • Check refrigerant pressures and electrical draws.
  • Verify defrost operation on heat pumps.
  • Inspect blowers, capacitors, contactors, and safety controls.
  • Clear condensate drains.
  • Check duct connections and obvious airflow restrictions.
  • Confirm auxiliary or dual-fuel heat is available if the system has it.

We service all major brands and are a Ruud-authorized dealer. Manufacturer warranties on many systems require documented annual maintenance. Skipping October can cost more than a service call if a parts claim is denied later.

Rebates Worth Asking About This Fall

If your heat pump is old, loud, or relying on backup heat more than it should, October is also a smart month to price a replacement — before the holiday rush and mid-winter emergency rates.

Cowlitz PUD continues to offer rebates on qualifying heat pump conversions and upgrades when the work is done by a participating contractor. Income-qualified Washington households may also have state weatherization or HEAR pathways available. Rebate amounts and rules change by program year, so we confirm current incentives when we quote the job rather than promising a number that may have shifted.

A free in-home assessment is the clean way to find out whether repair, a tune-up, or a high-efficiency Ruud heat pump or furnace is the better spend for this winter.

October Timeline for Longview-Area Homes

When Do this
First week of October Book the fall tune-up. Test heat. Change the filter. Clear the outdoor unit.
Mid-October Have service completed. Ask about dual-fuel settings, defrost, and any rooms that never heat evenly.
Late October First frost window. Confirm carbon monoxide alarms work. Know where the outdoor disconnect and filter are.
November If you skipped October, you are now in peak no-heat season. Call early in the day.

When to Call Instead of Waiting

Do not wait for a scheduled tune-up if you already have any of these:

  • No heat, or heat that dies after a few minutes.
  • A burning smell, gas odor, or a carbon monoxide alarm.
  • Ice covering the outdoor coil that does not melt after a defrost cycle.
  • Water around the indoor unit or furnace.
  • Repeated breaker trips.
  • A heat pump that runs constantly and never catches the setpoint.

Feltons’ Heating & Cooling offers 24/7 emergency service for no-heat and no-cool calls across Longview, Kelso, Castle Rock, Kalama, Woodland, Cathlamet, Rainier, St. Helens, Scappoose, Columbia City, and the surrounding communities. We answer after hours because that is when heating systems actually fail.

FAQ

Is October too late for a fall tune-up?

No. Early October is ideal. Mid-October is still a good window. Late October is better than waiting until the first freeze. The later you book, the more you compete with every other home that waited.

My heat pump worked all summer. Why service it now?

Cooling mode and heating mode use different parts of the same machine. The reversing valve, defrost control, and backup heat barely work in July. October is when those parts get tested.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

At least once a year. Twice a year is better in our climate: once before cooling season and once before heating season. Annual service also helps keep manufacturer warranties valid.

Can I just clean the outdoor unit myself?

You can clear leaves and give it space. Leave coil-fin straightening, refrigerant checks, electrical testing, and defrost diagnosis to a licensed technician.
